The Crucible, by Arthur Miller, while set in the late 1600's during the Salem witch trials, is actually an historical allegory for the McCarthy period of the early 1950's. As the anti-Communist fervor of the McCarthy era grew increasingly oppressive, Miller saw stark similarities between the early witch hunts and the investigations conducted by the House Un-American Activities Committee led by Senator Joseph McCarthy.
